Electrical Engineering Intern - Embedded Systems

Engineering · Internship

← All open roles

We are looking for a Summer 2027 Electrical Engineering Intern to build and test the electronics for our neural interface systems. This is a high-ownership role. You will own real hardware and firmware tasks from start to finish. You will not follow a fixed checklist. Your work feeds directly into the recording, stimulation and wireless systems on our platform. You will work closely with our electrical engineering, microfabrication, neuroengineering and biology teams in our Palo Alto lab.

What You’ll Do

  • Bring up and debug new board revisions for recording, stimulation, and wireless power and data
  • Design simple interface boards, adapters and test jigs in Altium or KiCad
  • Write Python scripts that control lab instruments, run tests and log the results
  • Build automated test setups that check devices in saline, at body temperature and under accelerated aging
  • Measure noise floor, signal integrity and power use on prototype boards
  • Help write and test firmware in C/C++ for microcontrollers and their peripherals
  • Run impedance and other electrochemical tests on electrode arrays
  • Assemble and rework boards, down to single components
  • Write clear test procedures, test reports and failure reports
  • Work with the biology and fabrication teams to set test requirements for each new design

What We’re Looking For

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Minimum 12-week commitment, full-time, on-site in Palo Alto
  • Current Bachelor’s or Master’s student in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Bioengineering or a related field
  • Hands-on hardware work outside class: PCB design, assembly, bring-up or debugging in a project team, lab or past internship
  • A strong base in analog and digital circuits
  • Practical use of lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, source meters and LCR meters
  • Programming in Python or MATLAB, including scripts that control instruments and analyze data
  • A step-by-step method for finding faults
  • Clear written test records
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, ambiguous startup environment

Nice to Have

  • PCB design in Altium or KiCad
  • Embedded firmware in C/C++ on microcontrollers
  • Common protocols such as SPI, I²C, UART, USB and BLE
  • Wireless power or data work, such as inductive coupling, BLE or RF design
  • Instrument control with VISA, SCPI or vendor APIs
  • FPGA work in Verilog or SystemVerilog
  • Electrochemical tests such as impedance spectroscopy (EIS) or cyclic voltammetry (CV)
  • Coursework or research in bioinstrumentation, neural engineering or medical devices
  • Electrophysiology recording or analysis

What You'll Get

  • Hands-on work on real hardware for next-gen neural interfaces
  • Mentorship from experienced engineers and scientists
  • Ownership of a project from first design to tested result
  • Opportunities to contribute to meaningful projects impacting real patients
